According to Nina Shea, an international human rights lawyer, the recent violence springing from derogatory depictions of Islam’s prophet Mohammad has revived a long standing demand from the Muslim world that the West, especially the U.S., should limit free speech to prevent incidents of the prophet being characterized in a negative way.
The demand for curbing free speech has come from Egypt’s Salafist Nour Party, Theocrats in Iran, the Hezbollah organization and by groups with ties or associations to Al-Qaeda. Diplomatically, tampering with free speech is being promoted by Muslim governments allied with the U.S..
It doesn’t take much thought to understand that foreign governments and terror groups demanding that the rights to free speech for Americans be limited, is a direct attempt to interfere with the rights of U.S. citizens by a foreign government. Even more interesting is; How will our government respond to Muslim demands that free speech for Americans be curbed to prevent negative portrayals of Mohammad?
What do you think?
